44 lawmakers unable to take oath as Punjab Assembly inaugurates new session

The commencement of the Punjab Assembly’s new session was marred on Friday by the absence of 44 elected lawmakers, casting a shadow over the inauguration proceedings.

321 newly elected members solemnly took their oaths of office under the supervision of Speaker Punjab Assembly in the inaugural session of the Punjab’s provincial assembly.Sardar Sabatin Khan. However, amidst the ceremonial proceedings, a notable absence of 44 elected members was observed, while the fate of 27 seats remained pending, awaiting the finalization of results.Tensions flared within the assembly as members of the Sunni Ittehad Council raised concerns regarding the allocation of specific seats, asserting that their representation had yet to be formally acknowledged.This led to a brief disruption marked by passionate exchanges and slogan chanting, with members of the League brandishing placards adorned with the likeness of Nawaz Sharif.In response to the chaos, Speaker Sardar Sabatin Khan adjourned the session momentarily for 45 minutes, aiming to restore order within the assembly hall. Upon reconvening, the Speaker proceeded to administer the oath to the present members, while expressing patience in anticipation of the absentees.The session concluded with a plan to reconvene at 4 pm on Saturday, during which the assembly is set to elect its Speaker and Deputy Speaker.Notably, Moin Riaz Qureshi had been nominated for the esteemed position of Speaker, heralding a new chapter in Punjab’s legislative journey.
